LOLER inspection in Inverness and the Highlands
Halro Safety & Lifting carries out lifting equipment inspection for businesses, councils and schools across Inverness and the Highlands. We are based in Muir of Ord, a short drive from Inverness, and we come to you wherever the kit is.
Under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER), anyone who owns or controls lifting equipment used at work must have it thoroughly examined by a competent person at set intervals. We carry out that thorough examination, record what we find and issue your report on the day.
If something needs replacing, we also hire and sell lifting equipment from Stoddart Crane Hire stock.
What we inspect
We carry out thorough examinations under LOLER on:
- Cranes and crane accessories
- MEWPs
- Hoists and winches
- Slings, chains, shackles and other lifting accessories
- Non-lifting kit, such as playground and climbing frame equipment for councils and schools
How often kit needs inspecting
Every 6 months
Lifting accessories, and any equipment used to lift people.
Every 12 months
All other lifting equipment, unless a written scheme says otherwise.
After any change
After installation, repair, or a move to a new location.
What a thorough examination covers
A thorough examination is a detailed, systematic check of the equipment and every part that affects its safety. It goes well beyond a visual look over. Depending on the kit, it includes:
- Identification, markings and the safe working load
- Structure, welds, hooks, links and fittings, checked for wear, damage and deformation
- Brakes, limits, controls and safety devices
- Functional checks, and load testing where the examination calls for it
- A written report listing any defects, how urgent they are and the date of the next examination
If we find a defect that puts people at risk, we tell you on the spot and the kit comes out of use. LOLER requires the competent person to report serious defects to the enforcing authority, so we send that report too.

Questions about LOLER inspections
Can’t see your question? Call 01463 000 000 or send us a message and we’ll come back to you within one working day.
How often does lifting equipment need a thorough examination?
At least every 6 months for lifting accessories and any equipment used to lift people, and at least every 12 months for other lifting equipment. A written scheme of examination can set different intervals. Kit also needs examining after installation, after major repair and after anything that could affect its safety.
What is the difference between a thorough examination and an inspection?
A thorough examination is the formal LOLER examination by a competent person, recorded in a written report. Inspections are the regular checks in between, such as pre-use checks, set by your own risk assessment. We can advise on both.
Do you cover Inverness?
Yes. Our workshop is in Muir of Ord, a short drive from Inverness, and we carry out on-site inspections across the Highlands. [CONFIRM] areas covered.
What happens if something fails?
We tell you on the day and record the defect in your report, with how urgent it is. Anything dangerous comes out of use straight away. We can advise on repair, or hire you a replacement from Stoddart stock.
Do you inspect climbing frames and playground equipment?
Yes. We inspect non-lifting kit such as school climbing frames and playground equipment for councils and schools. [CONFIRM] standards and scope.
How do I book an inspection?
Call 01463 000 000 or send the form with what you have and when it is due, and we will confirm a date. [CONFIRM] typical lead time.
When is your next inspection due?
Tell us the date and we’ll remind you before it comes round.
